Timing Bridges and Locks to Norfolk (#119)

Along with good weather, timing the bridges in critical to get through. The three bridges had opening on the hour and 1/2 hour.

The first bridge of the day let several boats through on the 1/2 hour

But the Great Bridge Bridge and lock only opened on the hour. Once you made your way through the Great Bridge Bridge.

The Norfolk Southern Bridge #7 only had three openings. We tried to get through early in the day so we could make the 2:15pm opening before the wind kicked up in the afternoon.

We were excited to complete our last lock that went so fast and so little it was hard to know we actually moved! But it was our last lock!

We arrived at Waterside marina in Norfolk and had a great view of Portsmouth, VA across the river.

Behind us were two Navy ships being repaired.

Overnight this big cruise ship pulled in right behind us.

Laura went to see the USS Wisconsin, but only on the top decks that were open and spacious.

There was a map that helped show an overview of where we were in relation to the Chesapeake Bay.

Laura was able to see then remove their lines, which has a whole new meaning after driving our boat for the past year.

The line was across the channel and there was someone with a yellow vest and a walkie talkie to release this long line.

The Cruise ship moved away sideways.

Then pulled behind the Sparkling Star.

And did a full turn in the turning basin we would go out in the next day.

We were able to have Ted's cousins over to see the boat and join us for brunch. So great to see family!

Norfolk - 2 nights
